Touch Controls That Actually Work

Touch Controls That Actually Work

Mobile control schemes are where good game ideas quietly die. I've played brilliant concepts ruined by a virtual stick that drifts, and simple games made great by one smart gesture.

The pattern I keep seeing in the good ones is this: fewer inputs, more depth per input. Coin Games gets away with a single drag-and-release because that one motion carries power, angle and intent all at once. Neon Drift Circuit's tap-to-brake does the same job for racing.

On-screen buttons are fine when they're big, few and in reach of your thumbs. The moment a game crowds the edges with tiny icons, I'm fighting the interface instead of playing. Tilt controls can be lovely for racing but awful for anything needing precision.

My rule of thumb when reviewing: if I can explain the controls in one sentence and still have room for mastery, the designer did their job. Most of my favourite mobile games pass that test easily.
